Job Description



School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Physical Plant Support Facility (PPSF) located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 




DUTIES:  Performs a variety of maintenance and repair work to maintain research laboratories and to meet the research mission of SOEST.  Work includes installation and maintenance of Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, plumbing, electrical, painting, masonry, and carpentry.  All work must conform to the precise standards of a research setting.  Assists with inspecting buildings, structures, research equipment, and facilities for needed repairs. Supervises student help. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  At least four (4) years of experience in building maintenance in a research setting to include HVAC systems, maintenance and repair work incidental to carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, and electrical trades. (At least four (4) years of journeyman-level work in a carpentry or electrical trade may substitute for building maintenance experience.).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of basic practices and methods utilized in the repair of research laboratories, including laboratory safety procedures, common tools, equipment and materials used in carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC systems, and electrical trades.  Ability to supervise student assistants.  Ability to determine the need for building repairs, use hand tools utilized in a variety of building trades, read and work from blueprints and sketches, make repairs to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing in research facilities housed in buildings.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position.  Must be able to lift and carry seventy-five (75) pounds.
