RESEARCH SUPPORT SCIENTIST (MINERAL PHYSICS LABORATORY) – ID# 18550

 

School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.  Regular, Part-Time (75% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position, with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), located on the campus of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,586.33/Mon (@ 75% FTE). 

 

DUTIES:  Works closely with the HIGP Mineral Physics group, supporting research programs involving graduate, undergraduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Provides day-to-day oversight and support of the experimental and computational infrastructure in HIGP high-pressure labs, including operation of labs and instruments. Responsible for interactions with facility users and technical support vendors.  Actively participates in instrument design and development projects of the Mineral Physics group. Interacts with the staff of SOEST engineering facilities, commercial instrument, and component and services vendors. Contributes to proposal writing to seek extramural funding and research projects supported by extramural funds and utilizing facilities available at HIGP. Publishes research results and contributes to the publication efforts of the HIGP Mineral Physics group. Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in high pressure research, mineralogy, petrology, crystallography, materials science and engineering, condensed matter physics, solid-state chemistry, spectroscopy or closely related field. (Master’s degree and at least four (4) years of mineral physics experience may substitute for a PhD).  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of related research experience including instrumentation used in high-pressure research. Publication record in high-pressure science, instrument or experimental method development, mineralogy, petrology, spectroscopy, or synchrotron radiation.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge, considerable experience and understanding of high-pressure experimental techniques and instrumentation with particular emphasis on diamond anvil cells, large volume press equipment, optical spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction equipment. Ability to design, plan, organize, and implement projects and tasks within an allotted timeframe.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Computer programming skills. Experience with instrument development, design, customization and control. Experience with mechanical design and knowledge of the associated software. Experience with laser technology. Hands-on experience with machine shop equipment operation.
