Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Research Computer Facility (RCF), School of Ocean & Earth Science & Technology (SOEST), located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH), Manoa campus Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications. 


DUTIES:  This is an advanced professional, highly responsible position that oversees the configuration, installation, maintenance/upgrade and monitoring/security of a distributed network of computers/servers, peripherals and software used for education, administration and research. Maintains control over the computing and technological requirements of SOEST, which includes establishing priorities, goals and objectives to meet current and future needs.  Assists in the development, research, integration, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of networks and their components. Develops application programs as required. Plans, implements, reviews, advises and coordinates the analysis, evaluation, integration and installation of current technologies. Designs and implements network outage backup/recovery solutions. Creates programs in various languages including C, C++, HTML, CGI, Java and shell scripts to manage, maintain, test, and/or troubleshoot the network equipment. Oversees, maintains and upgrades two (2) SOEST-wide data centers. Provides assistance to all SOEST users with network accounts, home directories, email, printing, installation of software including security programs and other SOEST user’s network issues. Provides consulting services to faculty, staff, and graduate students on hardware/software configurations. Advises personal computer (PC) and Macintosh users of updates and critical information as they become available, including possible security issues and virus prevention. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of experience of progressively responsible professional experience, which includes computer program development, systems and network administration, technical support, and consulting.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of  installations, maintenance, and operation procedures for UNIX and Windows systems. Thorough knowledge of computer network communication standards, Internet Protocol (IP)/Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/NFS protocol sets, DNS, NIS, AD and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) services.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Proficient ability to plan, direct, and implement complex systems and analysis programs.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to crawl through tight areas to string cable.  May need to open up computer machines to diagnose hardware problems.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Scientific application program development experience involving other programming languages (FORTRAN, C, C++, Python, R, PHP, and Java), real time data acquisition, image processing, numerical analysis, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Data Base Management Systems (DBMS), PC’s or supercomputers.  Study or work experience relating to any of SOEST academic disciplines (geology, geophysics, oceanography, meteorology, or ocean engineering).  Experience in setting up and managing multiple networks of heterogeneous UNIX computers using the IP protocol suite.  Working knowledge of Window Managers, Toolkits, and Widgets.  Seagoing experience.
