Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Head of Retail, the Sales Associate is directly responsible for providing exceptional and consistent visitor care at the Museum Shop. The Sales Associate handles all sales transactions from beginning to end with attention to detail and superb customer service. In addition, the associate assists with inventory and merchandising maintenance. 

 

The Honolulu Museum of Art:

Opened in 1927, the Honolulu Museum of Art is a home for art and education created for the benefit of the entire community. Founder Anna Rice Cooke envisioned a museum that would bring people together through the power of art and “the deep intuitions that are common to all.” The museum was conceived of as a place of meaningful exchange and dialogue, celebrating the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of Hawai‘i’s multi-ethnic population. From this founding intention grew the museum of today, with a world-class encyclopedic collection of more than 55,000 works of art, representing a stunning breadth of places and eras, from all corners of the globe and from the ancient past to the present day. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 to 2 years of customer service experience in a sales environment.
  • Basic retail knowledge, including point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory control, and merchandising.
  • Ability to handle retail transactions from beginning to end, including the processing of cash, credit cards, and gift certificates.
  • Enjoys working with the public, meeting new people, and partnering with volunteers and coworkers across the Museum.
  • Ability to engage with museum patrons in a positive, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and maintain a calm demeanor in challenging situations.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Desired Qualifications

  • Second language proficiency.
  • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art’s established identity and dedication to advancing it.

Essential Duties

  • Engages and greets shop visitors with a friendly and professional manner. Responds courteously to all inquiries.
  • Ensures accuracy in all cash and credit transactions.
  • Maintains general Museum knowledge to assist guests with inquiries regarding exhibitions and galleries.
  • Responsible for processing all sales transactions and completing daily deposits.
  • Performs inventory maintenance, unpacks merchandise, prices and organizes displays.
  • Daily maintenance of the shop, which includes light housekeeping.
  • Stays up to date with Museum activities and calendar.
  • Maintains a calm and professional demeanor while interacting with team members and the public.
  • Assists with Museum Shop activities and events as needed.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering cultivating, and preserving a culture of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility through respectful communication and cooperation with others, continuous training, and the modeling of inclusive behaviors.
  • In partnership with HR, supports the leadership team in ensuring equitable experiences, strengthening inclusion acumen and promoting a culture of belonging that embraces the contributions of all staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The range for this position is $19.00 per hour to $19.50 per hour. Please note that pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity. For PT employees, our benefits include:

  • 20 hours of sick leave accrued per year, with a maximum bank of 55 hours
  • Shop, Museum Café, and Art School discounts
  • Onsite parking provided

Working Conditions and Atmosphere:

Work takes place in a retail environment. Ability to operate general office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 25 pounds.

The Sales Associate will be scheduled an average of 15 hours per week during the shop’s operating hours:

  • Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday: 9:30a - 6:30p 
  • Friday: 9:30a - 9:30p
