Job Description

The Institute for Astronomy (IfA), University of Hawaii at Manoa is seeking a Scientific Instrument Technician to plan, orgranize, and direct the day-to-day management of the Institute's Manoa scientific instrument development/fabrication shop. Position is full-time and general funded to begin approximately January 2023, annually renewable pending availabilty of funds and satisfactory performance. Duties:  The incumbent will also provide technical oversight and support for the Institute's instrument development/fabrication shops in Hilo and Pukalani.  Supervise and participate in the design, development, construction, modification, upgrade, and repair of state-of-the-art, highly specialized, complex, and innovative research instruments and prototypes used in scientific research. Education and Professional Work Experience: Possession of a vocational degree in machine shop technology or related field and 6 year(s) of progressively responsible experience with responsibilities for an instrumentation or machine shop; or equivalent education/training or experience. Seven years of journey worker experience in one or more mechanical trades, three years of which must have involved supervisory level work in the fabrication, modification, and repair of scientific instruments.
