Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Learning and Engagement, the Studio Programs Manager provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for Honolulu Museum of Art’s Studio Programs (HoMA). This role plans, develops, implements, and manages art-making experiences that connect learners of all ages with HoMA’s collection, Lending Collection, and special exhibitions.

 

Studio Programs include youth and adult tuition-based art classes, workshops, and programmatic art-making events offered at the Honolulu Museum of Art School campus and the Museum. As a key member of HoMA’s Learning and Engagement team, the Studio Programs Manager collaborates with the Associate Director of Learning and Engagement and other program managers that oversee learning in the galleries and within the community to create transformative art experiences and lifelong learning opportunities across campus and throughout the islands. Together, the team builds on the museum’s collection to inspire and cultivate generations of creative, empathetic thinkers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Education or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience teaching art, developing curriculum, and/or managing an art program.
  • Broad knowledge of art education, object-based learning, and museum practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. 
  • Two years of experience supervising full-time employees, teaching artists, and/or part-time staff.
  • Experience coordinating programs, developing lesson plans, and designing, implementing, and delivering art education programs.
  • Commitment to social inclusion and making museums accessible to broad and diverse audiences.
  • Strong computer skills and willingness to learn new systems and software.
  • Honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment, enthusiasm, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a related field, such as Art Education, Art History, or Museum Studies.
  • Experience in museum or nonprofit environments with a variety of program needs.
  • Working knowledge of current art education pedagogy and Hawai‘i Department of Education curriculum.
  • Knowledge of Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Understanding of the Honolulu Museum of Art’s identity and commitment to advancing it.
  • Exceptional ability to manage and lead people, build team capabilities, and develop an engaged staff and volunteer workforce.
  • Self-motivated, mission-driven professional with strong initiative and sound judgment.

Essential Duties:

Program Leadership and Strategy: 

  • Set, model, and advance the vision, mission, and values of Studio Programs.
  • Develop, implement, and uphold Studio Programs policies and procedures in collaboration with the Studio Programs team.
  • Maintain knowledge of art education best practices and apply current scholarship to program planning and delivery.

Staff Supervision and Professional Development: 

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise art instructors, teaching assistants, and other Studio Programs staff.
  • Oversee program quality through teacher observations, curriculum feedback, and organized professional learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Engagement team to develop professional development workshops for Hawai‘i art educators and training opportunities for HoMA art instructors.

Curriculum and Program Planning: 

  • Lead planning for Studio Programs classes and workshops, including program outlines, schedules, and curriculum priorities.
  • Collaborate with Studio Programs teachers and local and national artists to generate ideas for new classes and workshops.
  • Consult with Studio Programs teachers and visiting artists, providing feedback on curriculum planning and development.
  • Support evaluation and assessment of Learning and Engagement programs.

Operations, Budget, and Administration: 

  • Work closely with the Director of Learning and Engagement to establish and manage the operational budget for the Art School and Studio Programs across the museum.
  • Partner with the Administrative Support Coordinator to allocate spending for supplies and equipment.
  • Track and maintain Studio Programs records and provide reporting information as needed.
  • Work with the Ticketing and Website teams to implement and manage registration processes.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications department to provide content for Studio Programs marketing and website updates.
  • Work closely with the Facilities Supervisor to support long-term facilities projects and goals.
  • Create, maintain, and uphold the Student Code of Conduct and related policies.

Collaboration and Partnerships: 

  • Develop strategic partnerships with schools, educators, and cultural and community organizations.
  • Represent the Art School in Department Head meetings and contribute to a positive, productive interdepartmental work environment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering cultivating, and preserving a culture of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility through respectful communication and cooperation with others, continuous training, and the modeling of inclusive behaviors.
  • In partnership with HR, supports the leadership team in ensuring equitable experiences, strengthening inclusion acumen and promoting a culture of belonging that embraces the contributions of all staff.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Compensation:

The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000 per annum. Please note that pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere:

Work takes place in an office environment. General office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with flexible scheduling as appropriate. Ability to operate general office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 25 pounds of general office material or equipment. Ability to work some evening and weekend hours and be available for emergencies.
