UX/UI DIGITAL ARTS DESIGNER – ID# 224361.​

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH), Manoa Innovation Center, in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $6,650 - $10,000/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Creates user experience/user interface (UX/UI) digital art that encapsulates and expresses the diverse range of projects that ARL supports. Understands the brand, marketing indicatives, strategic positioning and target audience. Researches and conducts informal testing to validate design directions and inform new thinking for key features. Develops graphics, illustrations, and other creative materials for the web, social, and other digital platforms that is on-brand, reinforces our status and reputation, and is appropriate for our various audiences. Creates digital media using various resources such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Blender and Premier Pro. Works with ARL Public Relations to create internal and public digital art using video/picture media in mobile, desktop, print and web-based platforms. Responsible to bridge the gap between aesthetics and functionality, ensuring that products not only look good but also provide meaningful and enjoyable experiences for users. Provides ongoing management and maintenance of the public ARL website with WordPress. Responsible for website development of ARL extramurally and internally funded projects. Participates in the entire development lifecycle, focusing on coding and debugging of ARL’s public web presence. Responsible for maintaining, updating, expanding, and scaling the ARL website. Designs and optimizes pages with mobile-first features. Collaborates with other ARL outreach and business development personnel to provide support with UX/UI designs for internally and extramurally funded projects. Collaborates with other ARL outreach and business development personnel in creating and modifying 3D assets, lighting, rigging, and animation. Works with ARL teams to provide 3D print design support for various systems. Collaborates with the ARL Information Security team to ensure adherence to all recommended guidelines, directives, and ARL information assurance plans, policies, and procedures. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a focus on computer science, software development, interactive and web design, or a related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college focus on computer science, software development, interactive and web design and an additional two (2) years of related work experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of work experience in a similar role described in duties & responsibilities. Experience must include web development, motion graphics design, 3D modeling, UX/UI and animation design.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of digital art environments including graphic designs concepts, such as vector illustrations, typography, compositing and color, masks and 3D animation. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite. Working knowledge of a variety of design software including but not limited to Blender, Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effectsand other emerging design tools. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS and responsive design principles.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be a U.S. Citizen, a requirement of the Government security investigation to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated ability to efficiently complete projects and work with multi-disciplinary team to provide digital media and web development support in a cross-platform, multi-platform distributed environment with local and cloud-based infrastructure resources. In-depth understanding of 3D physics and art creation. Strong fundamental design and vector illustration skills. Attention to detail skills. Familiarity with Adobe suite and 3rd party plugins. Proficient in graphic design experience and adept at using Mobile- and Web-based application development languages and environments/tools (e.g., WordPress, PHP, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript). Ability to handle multiple tasks and work requirements simultaneously to meet variable deadlines.  Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and with internal or external affiliates, in written and oral format. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, team members, and the general public. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on a tier-3 background investigation to access classified information. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to perform repetitive keyboard entry for twenty to forty (20-40) hours per week. Must be able to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds unassisted from ground level while in a standing position.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Five to seven (5-7)  years of professional experience developing digital media. Experience in a research environment is preferred. Knowledge of basic physics and/or engineering principles. Experience designing comprehensive 3D models. Familiarity with CAD modeling and design to support 3D print needs for unmanned systems (UxS) design and assembly.
