The Unit Manager advances this vision by ensuring safe, high-quality nursing care, supporting staff development, and maintaining compliance while keeping residents’ dignity and well-being at the center of care.
Position Purpose
The Unit Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of a nursing unit at Liliha Healthcare Center, assisting the DON in planning, developing, and coordinating nursing services. This role ensures compliance with regulations, provides clinical and administrative oversight, and fosters teamwork among staff to deliver resident-centered care.
Required Qualifications
Minimum requirements include the following:
- A nursing degree from an accredited college or university,
- Minimum two (2) years of experience providing direct care in long-term care, restorative or geriatric setting as an LPN/RN.
- Minimum (1) year of experience in nursing management.
- Current CPR Certification.
Must also meet state requirements for relevant licensures or certifications and have no disciplinary action in effect against professional license.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight
- Direct and supervise nursing care to ensure safe, high-quality, person-centered services.
- Oversee admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Monitor resident conditions, assessments, and care planning with the interdisciplinary team.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, medication management, and safety protocols.
- Review nurses’ notes for accuracy and ensure care aligns with resident needs and preferences.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Provide daily leadership, mentoring, and support to nursing staff.
- Assign nursing/aide duties and ensure adequate coverage on all shifts.
- Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and corrective action as needed.
- Encourage staff professional growth through training and in-services.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure unit meets regulatory requirements (CMS, DOH, OSHA, HIPAA).
- Prepare staff for surveys and audits; lead corrective action planning as needed.
- Participate in QAPI, facility assessments, and care plan meetings.
- Document nursing services in compliance with facility and regulatory standards.
Resident & Family Relations
- Act as primary contact for residents and families regarding unit care concerns.
- Promote resident rights, dignity, and respect in all interactions.
- Participate in care conferences and grievance resolution.
Administrative & Operational Functions
- Maintain adequate supplies, medications, and equipment on the unit.
- Monitor unit budget and resource use, reporting concerns to DON/Administration.
- Ensure accurate EMR documentation and timely reporting.
- Participate in leadership meetings and facility committees.
Additional Responsibilities
- Treat residents, families, and staff with dignity and respect.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident health information (HIPAA).
- Report allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation immediately.
- Participate in safety, life safety, and emergency drills.
- Follow infection control policies and use proper body mechanics.
- Perform licensed nurse duties when staffing requires.
