(3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program’s “Vanguard Center for High Performance Computing”, located at the Maui Research and Technology Park (MRTP) in Maui, Hawai‘i. Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. This position will conduct research under the University of Hawai‘i Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) Task Orders. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $4,500 - $7,000/Mon. 

 


DUTIES:  Monitors the Vanguard Center of High Performance Computing (VCHPC) computational and facility infrastructure in close coordination with senior technical, administrative, and security staff members. Monitors large installation computer and network equipment, including supercomputers and distributed server systems. Provides help desk support and facility security. Troubleshoots computing and network systems deviations and assists other operations staff in detecting nature of non-routine job errors or equipment failures, especially in area of specialization. Ensures efficient processing of new user accounts. Reviews, tests, and implements new system applications, and makes suggestions to correct or enhance system. Operates multiple control consoles, online terminals, laser and line printers, and forms-handling equipment. Analyzes and responds to routine console instructions and error messages. May perform file system backups. Logs events during shift, including system malfunctions and disruptions, into log book/discussion forum database and creates shift reports for supervisory review. Assists in resolving other software/hardware issues, online processing problems, or applications processing problems. Assists with installing cables, connectors, communications hubs, etc. Assists in training new operators and other staff members. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends as required to fulfill duties and responsibilities. 


 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or a certificate from a Technical School in computer operations and programming or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and up to one (1) year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities may substitute for an Associate’s Degree or Technical School certificate. Also, equivalent combination of education and training (e.g., certifications) that is sufficient to demonstrate ability and competence to perform duties will substitute for an Associate’s Degree or Technical School certificate.)

EXPERIENCE

At least one (1) year of experience working as a computer operator or related job monitoring and responding to computer operations and error messages.  Experience includes entering commands and data at a computer terminal, and setting controls on computers and peripheral devices.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of basic computer technology, operations, hardware, and software. Knowledge of at least one (1) computer system and associated operating system (e.g., Unix, Linux, Windows 7, Windows 10, MacOS) and installing hardware or software on that system.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be a U.S. Citizen, a requirement of the Government security investigation to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Ability to communicate with senior computer professionals in diagnosing and resolving problems. Ability to follow documented directions, processes, and procedures. Ability to follow a problem escalation procedure. Ability to utilize a workstation or computer terminal to enter commands and obtain responses. Ability to monitor a Help Desk and clearly communicate with system users verbally and via e-mail in capturing, logging, and coordinating the resolution of user problems. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post-Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on a tier-3 background investigation to access classified information. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds from a standing or bending position unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Current Information Assurance (IA) Certification in accordance with DoD 8570.01-M, such as Security+ Certification, A+ Certification, Network+ Certification, etc. In-depth specialization in a particular area of computer operation.
