(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Vanguard Center of High Performance Computing (VCHPC) project, Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program’s Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), located at the Maui Research and Technology Park (MRTP) in Maui, Hawai‘i. This position will conduct research under the University of Hawai‘i Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) Task Orders. Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 


MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $6,000 - $10,499/Mon. 

 


DUTIES:  Provides beginner to intermediate level support and assistance in systems programming and networking support for a large scale, high performance computing complex at the Vanguard Center for High Performance Computing (VCHPC). Assists in the administration and maintenance of scalable high performance supercomputing configurations as well as other UNIX based systems and peripherals. Assists in the technical support and maintenance of local and wide area network services, and hyperconverged architecture such as Nutanix. Installs and configures various networking services, hardware components and associated software. Participates in network and system design, network and system performance analyses, procedural documentation, problem resolution and network and system security initiatives. Supports staff in the development of system management tools and architectural assessments. Works with other VCHPC departmental entities to provide a comprehensive support infrastructure for a wide range of Department of Defense (DoD) and other Government customers. This is a progression job, ranging from Level I-III. Availability and ability to perform duties independently is expected to increase with each level of progression. Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level. 

 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in network/engineering or related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in a related field, and at least of two (2) additional years of work experience which is equivalent to the duties of this job and has acquired the skills necessary to perform all job duties, or High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least four (4) additional years of related work experience equivalent to the job duties and has acquired the skills necessary to perform all job duties may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Progression job with minimum experience requirements for Level I, and combination of experience and demonstrated competence and abilities for Levels II and III. Three to five (3-5) years of experience in similar role described in duties & responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE

Beginning to intermediate level of knowledge of high-speed network interfaces, UNIX network and system facilities, and fundamental aspects of network management. Beginning to intermediate level of knowledge of high performance networking architectures and protocols, such as BGP, OSPF, DoD Cloud architectures, both IPv4 and IPv6 routing, and evolving network standards; high speed network interfaces such as 10GigE and Infiniband. Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge of advanced network management mechanisms, strategies, and tools such as SNMP based monitoring packages. Knowledge of modifying DNS zone files and syncing to parent server, with some DNSSEC experience preferred.  TCP/IP in a UNIX environment in addition to DNS, SNMP, BGP, OSPF, etc.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be a U.S. Citizen, a requirement of the U.S. Government security investigation to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Ability to provide comprehensive Operations support in a large scale, high performance, multi-computing system production environment.  Skills in the installation and the configuration of operating systems and application software. Ability to demonstrate skills necessary to monitor system usage and performance statistics and to understand the impacts of operating system tuning parameters. Ability to demonstrate skills necessary to understand and follow established methods and procedures for the installation of system modifications. Ability to develop and/or debug software using scripted or compiled languages such as C, C++, csh, Awk, Perl, etc. Ability to demonstrate skills necessary to understand evolving network technologies and to predict potential impacts on operational capabilities. Ability to demonstrate skills necessary to resolve routing problems in a multiple vendor, multiple customer environment. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to listen and speak clearly on all communications devices. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post-Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on a tier-3 background investigation to access classified information. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and speaking. Ability to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds from a standing or bending position unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Current Information Assurance (IA) Certification in accordance with DoD 8570.01-M, such as Security+ CE, and an in-depth specialization in a particular area of computer operation.  Current Top Secret clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility. Experience working with UNIX/Linux clusters, DNS, NIS, UNIX/Linux email servers, Encryption Devices, Cisco or Juniper products and MPI.
