Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Vanguard Center of High Perfomance Computing (VCHPC) project, Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program’s Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), located at the Maui Research and Technology Park (MRTP) in Maui, Hawai‘i. This position will conduct research under the University of Hawai‘i Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) Task Orders. Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Directly supervises computer operators in a large scale, high performance, and scalable production-computing environment at the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC). Generates work assignments, develops work schedules, and coordinates training for the MHPCC computer operators. Interfaces directly with other Managers to evaluate their requirements and assign tasks to computer operators in support of MHPCC Operations, Security and Directed Technical tasks. Provides technical guidance to the Operators in the areas of hardware and software installation, configuration and maintenance of large UNIX based systems and architectures. Acts as a technical lead on HPC and Information Technology projects. Provides general UNIX/Windows systems support to include such tasks as the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating system, application, and other software; monitors system usage; supports design, building, deployment, maintenance and support of MHPCC IT infrastructure. Develops procedures including, but not limited to, monitoring high performance computing systems and networks, performing system backups, maintaining user accounts, conducting facility security and evaluating, resolving and/or escalating user problems. Assists in training new operators and other staff members. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends as required to fulfill duties and responsibilities.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a related Technical, Scientific, or Engineering discipline. (Associate’s Degree and at least two (2) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
Five to seven (5-7) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Windows/UNIX concepts and facilities; scripting languages (like, PowerShell, CSH, or PERL);. Ability to monitor and evaluate system-operating characteristics. Knowledge of current and developing trends in computer hardware and software technology. Knowledge of computer hardware and software problem resolution procedures. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must be a U.S. Citizen duetoDepartmentofDefense (DoD) requirements. Ability to provide comprehensive Operations support in a large scale, high performance, multi-computing system production environment. Ability to effectively communicate with MHPCC Technical Staff and Program Managers in obtaining technical information. Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports. Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage direct reports through effective communication and leadership. Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work. Ability to review work and evaluate performance, and develop required job competencies of direct reports. Technical leadership and supervisory skills within area of expertise. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post-Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on a tier-3 background investigation to access classified information. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds from a standing or bending position unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Information Assurance (IA) Certification in accordance with DoD 8570.01-M, such as Security+ CE, and an in-depth specialization in a particular area of computer operation. DoD security clearance.
