Job Description



Maunakea Observatories Support Services.  (4) Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Visitor Information Station (VIS) Maunakea Observatories Support Services (MKSS), located at Hale Pohaku, on the island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


HOURLY RATE RANGE:  $14.47-$21.55/Hr. 


DUTIES:  Interacts with visitors to Maunakea through the Visitor Information Station (VIS) programs. Presents all aspects of VIS stargazing programs to the general public.  Warns visitors about the hazards encountered on Maunakea and provides advice on how to have a safe trip. Works as a stock person at the bookstore. Performs housekeeping duties.  Progression from a VIS Interpretive Guide I to VIS Interpretive Guide II may be possible upon demonstrated ability to meet established performance factors and project specific competencies, including satisfactory completion of all required trainings. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years of college level course-work.  EXPERIENCE:  At least six (6) months of experience as an interpretive guide or similar work demonstrating an ability to educate in a professional manner or customer service that is consistent with mission, corporate values and culture of the VIS/MKSS.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of cultural, astronomical, geological, archeological, natural history, and/or environmental features of Maunakea. Familiarity with the night sky, including the locations of planets, nebulae, etc.  Able to use email, Internet, and standard office computer applications.  Ability to communicate interpretive material to the public in an informative and interesting manner. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external audiences.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Primary work site is located 9,200 feet above sea level with wide temperature variations.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis (which includes a substance abuse test).  Must obtain a medical doctor’s approval for work at high altitudes.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a field applicable to at least some of the described duties.  Firsthand experience with Maunakea and its astronomical, cultural, and/or natural resources.  Experience operating astronomical telescopes and/or astronomical imaging devices.  Experience with construction, maintenance, or repair of optical and/or astronomical equipment.  Experience with computer, networking, and/or website construction and maintenance.  Experience working at high altitudes.  Experience working within retail or volunteer programs.  Proficiency in a second language besides English.
