Job Description

The Medical Billing & Collections Specialist is responsible for managing the end-to-end billing and collections process for medical accounts receivable. This role ensures accurate claim submission, timely payments, and effective follow-up with insurance companies and patients. The specialist must maintain compliance with company policies, HIPAA regulations, and all applicable laws related to medical billing and collections.

$20 an hour

Responsibilities

  • Review and verify patient registration, insurance, and eligibility data.
  • Post charges from coding documentation into the billing system accurately.
  • Prepare and submit claims electronically and via paper as required.
  • Identify and correct billing errors; resubmit corrected claims promptly.
  • Post insurance payments and contractual adjustments into the billing system.
  • Review remittance advice for payment errors, denials, and underpayments.
  • Follow up with payers and initiate appeals when necessary.
  • Document all account activity and follow-up actions in system notes.
  • Send patient account reminders and manage follow-up communications.
  • Post and reconcile patient payments.
  • Monitor and work accounts receivable (A/R) aging reports.
  • Prepare delinquent accounts for submission to third-party collection agencies.
  • Provide courteous and professional assistance to patients, staff, and management via phone and in-person.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality in all tasks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in medical billing and follow-up preferred.
  • Working knowledge of medical billing and/or coding systems.
  • Understanding of insurance claim processes, denials, and appeals.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and other applicable healthcare billing regulations.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage time independently.
  • Ability to adapt to varying work styles and personalities.
  • Experience with billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems preferred.
