Job Description

A growing Hawaii-based company is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, and enhance business-critical enterprise systems. The platform is undergoing significant expansion and modernization as it evolves to support a broader range of business-critical workflows. You will work across the full stack, utilizing Java for backend services, Angular for the frontend, and MySQL and MongoDB data stores.

This is an ideal role for an engineer who enjoys balancing new feature development with the modernization of an established codebase. The business is also investing heavily in AI-assisted development and is looking for someone who can help establish repeatable AI-assisted engineering workflows and practices.

This position will allow hybrid work-from-home days after training, subject to the manager's discretion and approval. The ideal candidate will reside in Honolulu and be able to work in the office regularly.

Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

Pay

$120,000 to $160,000 a year, based on experience

Responsibilities

• Own technical solutions from design through implementation, deployment, and production support across the platform.
• Build and enhance Java backend services and RESTful APIs while modernizing our Angular frontend (TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Angular Material).
• Work with MySQL and MongoDB to ensure the application remains reliable, scalable, and secure.
• Diagnose and resolve complex issues across the entire application stack.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools and create custom skills, prompts, agents, and workflows that improve team productivity and code quality.
• Partner with product and cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into clean, maintainable, and high-performing code.
• Drive architecture discussions, perform code reviews, and help establish and maintain high engineering standards.

Qualifications

Required

• 7+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Java backend development and RESTful APIs, along with Angular, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and Angular Material.
• Proven success in refactoring legacy codebases and reducing technical debt without disrupting ongoing business delivery.
• Experience with MySQL and MongoDB or comparable relational and document-oriented databases.
• Experience using AI-assisted software development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar technologies.
• Experience creating custom skills, agents, prompts, commands, or reusable workflows for AI-assisted development tools.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, secure development practices, and Git-based collaboration.
• Must currently reside in Hawaii and be able to work in-office on a regular basis.

Preferred

• Experience with HRIS, recruiting software, or complex enterprise systems involving financially sensitive data (payroll, billing).
• Comfortable working in Linux environments, including command-line usage and troubleshooting.
• Experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, and cloud performance tuning.
