Job Description
The Commercial Electrical Apprentice will assist the Electrical Journeyman in the installation process for solar PV. The Apprentice maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment and keeps parts and supplies in order. Perform skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.
He/she will also test installed products, repaired and/or modify equipment for proper performance and assist in ordering replacement equipment, parts, and supplies (with purchasing). Other duties may be assigned as required.
Scope of responsibilities:
- Responsible for maintaining vehicle cleanliness by cleaning out all trash from the day before (Cardboard, wire, conduit…), submit part returns, throughout the day ensures parts are put back properly in inventory.
- Prepare for day’s work by filling water coolers with fresh water ensuring enough for team
- Ensure materials and tools are stocked for upcoming work
- Ensure general site preparation and continuous job-site clean-up is being performed, assist as needed by putting up the tent and setting up the worktable, staging tools and charging them.
- E3 to install DC/AC circuits and conduit systems from roof box to inverter as approved by crew lead
- Performs any trench work
- Pull wire and mount equipment
- Perform rough ins
- Programing, testing, and commissioning of the PV system
- Testing roof components, J box, DC for voltage and then be able to troubleshoot any of these areas having issues.
- Maintain constant communication with their crew leader on the status of task completion and is proactive in accomplishing all tasks assigned and those necessary for the job
- Participates in maintaining safety on the job site by correcting any identified hazards
- Installs fall protection safety equipment on job site
- Maintains a neat and professional appearance, job site and communicates with the customers in a positive manner, they are the face and mouth of Rising Sun Solar.
- Work with Electrical Journeyman to ensure material is available and loaded on truck for that day’s work. Able to leave the warehouse within 15-20 minutes of your workday start time.
- Need to be able to run a crew, setting goals, oversee quality, CODE COMPLIANCE
- Coordination with customer and communication
- An E3 can follow SLDs and Roof maps to assist and lead the task of laying out system and planning roof penetrations.
- E3 can install conductors for the entire system
- E3 can install all electrical equipment (meters, disconnects, load centers, batteries, inverters, there and backs, monitoring)
- E3 will complete running conduit (both exterior and in attics and crawl spaces) as well as supervise that this task is completed.
- E3 can comfortably bend pipe: PVC & EMT
- E3 will be familiar and know the NEC codes and tables to determine the size of conduits, wire, and conduit fills
- E3 is proficient in pre-planning layout to eliminate conflicts in equipment installation
- E3 is responsible for assisting in finalizing the project (labels, stickers, reports, pictures, safety site sheet)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Understanding of NEC codes and County codes
- Able to work with others in a small team environment and take direction from the Electrical Journeyman.
- The E3 is expected to lead others and give direction when EJ is not available.
- Comfortable climbing ladders plus standing and working on roof tops, multi-story in both hot and cold weather.
- Follows all OSHA and company safety requirements without question.
- Follows all company operations standards, policies and processes.
- Candidate owns their own hand tools

- Coordinates/communicates with respective parties in the event that project is running behind (EJ, RSS & Office)
- Assists with training other apprentices
- Basic understanding of engineering
- Candidate at this level is expected to proactively be working on obtaining Electrical Journeyman License
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, climb, bend, kneel, balance, stoop, walk and reach. The employee will frequently be required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Comfortable climbing ladders plus standing and working on residential roof tops (single and 2-story) in both hot and cold weather.
