About Maui United Way

Maui United Way mobilizes people, partners, and resources to strengthen Maui County. We value pilina (relationship), kuleana (responsibility), and aloha in service to our community.

Position Summary

The Development Director is MUW’s chief fundraising strategist and relationship builder, responsible for securing a minimum of $2.8 million in annual revenue through a balanced portfolio that includes major gifts, grants (federal/state/county), corporate partnerships, foundation support, and individual giving (including low-dollar campaigns). The Director leads the development team, partners closely with the CEO and Board, and uses data-driven insights to deepen donor loyalty, grow lifetime value, and advance MUW’s mission across Maui County.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Revenue Leadership

  • Own and deliver an annual revenue target of $2.8M+, with clear channel strategies and quarterly forecasts.
  • Design and implement a multi-year fundraising plan that integrates major gifts, annual/recurring giving, corporate/foundation partnerships, grants, and special/capital initiatives as needed.
  • Create a development budget; manage performance against goal; provide regular pipeline and progress reports to the CEO and Board.

Major Gifts, Donor Cultivation & Stewardship

  • Build and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects (e.g., $10,000+ capacity), including high-net-worth individuals whose giving aligns with MUW’s mission and vision.
  • Develop tailored cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans; prepare compelling cases for support and gift proposals.
  • Plan and host high-touch engagement (site visits, small salons, mission-driven gatherings) and ensure timely, personalized stewardship and impact reporting.

Institutional Giving: Grants, Foundations & Corporations

  • Lead end-to-end grant strategy: prospecting, proposal development, budgeting, submission, award compliance, deliverable tracking, and reporting across federal, state, county, and private funders.
  • Cultivate relationships with foundations that historically support organizations like MUW; engage MUW staff and board in cultivation as appropriate.
  • Strengthen and expand corporate partnerships—especially organizations with Hawaiʻi connections—through sponsorships, workplace giving, employee engagement, and strategic collaborations.

Individual Giving & Community Campaigns

  • Launch and scale a low-dollar donor campaign (recurring and one-time gifts) to expand MUW’s base and improve donor retention.
  • Create segmented journeys (welcome, upgrade, lapsed reactivation) and optimize messaging, cadence, and channels for growth.

Data, Systems & Analytics

  • Lead donor database management (CRM); ensure data integrity, segmentation, and analytics.
  • Track donor engagement and campaign effectiveness; generate dashboards and actionable insights to inform decisions and measure ROI, retention, and LTV.
  • Establish KPIs for portfolio activity (moves management), pipeline health, and channel-level performance.

Board & Executive Partnership

  • Facilitate 100% Board giving and equip Board members to open doors, steward relationships, and participate in solicitations.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, leadership team, and community stakeholders to align development efforts with organizational priorities and impact goals.
  • Serve as an MUW ambassador in diverse community, business, and cultural settings.

People Leadership

  • As a director, supervise and develop development staff and consultants; assign work, set goals, provide coaching and performance feedback, and recommend recognition or corrective action as needed.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and aloha.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred—or equivalent combination of relevant knowledge and experience in development/fundraising.
  • Senior-level nonprofit experience, with 3+ years directly in development or closely related roles; private or public sector experience considered with significant nonprofit engagement.
  • Demonstrated success securing significant gifts (ideally six-figure) and managing a major gifts portfolio.
  • Established Hawaiʻi networks (Maui focus preferred) and a strong record of cultivating and maintaining long-term relationships with funders, corporations, government, and community leaders.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s diverse political and cultural landscape—especially current opportunities and stressors facing Maui.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian cultural values and worldviews; ability to navigate cultural gatherings/protocol and formal business/donor settings.
  • Clear, compelling communicator—written and verbal—with the ability to inspire giving and partnership.
  • Proficiency with donor CRMs and fundraising tools; comfort with data analytics and reporting.
  • Passionate advocate for MUW’s mission and impact.
  • Familiarity and/or fluency in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (at least commonly used words).

Highly Considered:

  • Hawaiʻi resident or former resident seeking to return to Maui and serve full-time; Maui County roots a plus to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Key Performance Indicators (First 12 Months)

  • Meet or exceed $2.8M in total revenue.
  • Build and actively manage a qualified portfolio of major donors/prospects with documented moves and gift asks.
  • Submit and manage a targeted grants calendar with on-time deliverables and high-quality reports.
  • Maintain 100% Board giving and increase Board engagement in cultivation/solicitation.
  • Improve donor retention and grow the recurring donor base through the low-dollar campaign.
  • Deliver accurate monthly dashboards for pipeline, revenue, retention, and channel ROI.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $90,000–$120,000 annually, commensurate with experience, with potential for performance bonuses.
  • Health Benefits: MUW pays 100% of the premium for individual coverage through MUW’s current insurance provider.
  • Retirement: 403(b) with up to 6% employer match (effective after probationary period).
  • Additional standard paid time off and holidays per MUW policy.
