Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Heavy Equipment / Diesel Technician to join our client's team. This position is ideal for a highly skilled technician who can independently diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures, utilize advanced diagnostic technology, and perform major repairs with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism. The successful candidate will serve as a key technical resource within the service department, helping mentor less-experienced technicians while working closely with management, customers, equipment manufacturers, and technical support teams to resolve challenging equipment issues.

Hours

Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm

Location

Kailua-Kona, Big Island

Pay

$41 an hour, depending on experience

Responsibilities

• Independently diagnose, repair, and overhaul major systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and aftertreatment/emissions systems.
• Utilize laptop-based diagnostic software to analyze live data streams, including voltages, pressures, temperatures, and other PIDs, to identify root causes of equipment failures—even when no fault codes are present.
• Perform advanced bi-directional testing, including cylinder cut-outs, injector kill tests, fan overrides, actuator testing, and other functional tests to isolate faulty components.
• Perform software updates, ECU flashing, calibration, and component programming, including injector trim codes and hydraulic pump flow calibration.
• Interpret and utilize advanced electrical and hydraulic schematics to manually trace open circuits, shorts, voltage drops, pressure losses, and other system faults when electronic diagnostics alone are insufficient.
• Maintain a high standard of workmanship, safety, documentation, and customer service.
• Exercise sound judgment when determining the appropriate diagnostic and repair path for complex equipment failures.
• Mentor junior technicians on effective use of diagnostic technology and teach a systematic approach to moving beyond basic fault-code retrieval toward complete system diagnosis.
• Clearly document diagnostic findings, troubleshooting steps, repair recommendations, and technical communications.
• Work closely with the Service Manager to develop accurate, itemized repair estimates based on diagnostic findings.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, diesel technician, or related position.
• Expert-level proficiency with electronic diagnostic tools and the ability to interpret graphs, waveforms, live data, and PID information.
• In-depth understanding of CAN-bus communication systems, Tier 4 Final emissions systems, electronic engine controls, and hydraulic systems.
• Strong ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics.
• Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic failures.
• Experience performing major repairs and overhauls on heavy equipment engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and aftertreatment systems.
• ASE, Diesel Technician, and/or OEM Factory certifications are strongly preferred.
• Must possess a comprehensive set of professional-grade tools appropriate for major heavy equipment repair.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
