Farm Manager
Full-Time, 40 hours/week, Exempt, At-Will

Hoʻokuaʻāina is a vibrant nonprofit based in Kailua, Oʻahu, dedicated to cultivating community, cultural identity, and leadership through traditional Hawaiian practices and ʻāina-based education. Rooted in aloha ʻāina, we are committed to fostering connection, healing, and sustainability.
We are currently expanding our impact through the development of 116 acres of agricultural land that will serve as a food hub and community resiliency center. This visionary project will create a thriving, regenerative model of food security, cultural resilience, and environmental stewardship—one that can inspire communities around the world.
As we grow, we are seeking a passionate and skilled Farm Manager to lead our agricultural operations, build sustainable farming systems, and help advance our mission of creating a resilient Hawaiʻi.
Position Overview
The Farm Manager plays a critical leadership role in overseeing agricultural production and land stewardship across Hoʻokuaʻāina’s two locations: Pālāwai and Kapalai. The Farm Manager is responsible for supervising the farm team, developing and maintaining sustainable agricultural systems, and ensuring economic viability in alignment with Hoʻokuaʻāina’s mission of food sovereignty, cultural resilience, and community well-being.
This position will lead the development of farm infrastructure, coordinate production activities, and build strategic partnerships that support environmental sustainability and community resilience in Hawaiʻi.
Key Responsibilities
Farm & Agricultural Management
- Provide operational oversight and support across both Pālāwai and Kapalai locations, collectively 120 acres, ensuring consistency with organizational goals.
- Design, implement, and manage agricultural systems at Pālāwai, including crops, livestock, and farm-based programs.
- Develop and oversee infrastructure projects such as fencing, roads, equipment procurement, field layouts, and storage facilities.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise, train, and manage a team of farm workers (roughly 15-20 people) to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality operations.
- Mentor staff and support their professional growth and skill development.
- Manage staff scheduling, task assignments, and performance evaluations.
- Promote a collaborative, respectful, and culturally grounded work environment.
Economic Performance & Systems
- Collaborate with the Operations Manager, consultants, and Executive Directors to advance the farm’s strategic plan and provide regular progress updates to the Board.
- Enhance the economic sustainability and productivity of the farm operations.
- Develop and implement systems for sales tracking, production data management, and reporting.
Sustainable & Organic Practices
- Research and apply best regenerative and organic farm practices tailored to Hawaiʻi’s environment.
- Incorporate techniques that are informed by ʻike Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian ancestral knowledge).
- Implement modern innovation and technological advancements.
Partnerships & Community Representation
- Build networks with peer organizations to develop collaborative models for food sovereignty in Hawaiʻi.
- Represent Hoʻokuaʻāina at community events, conferences, and outreach engagements in a professional manner.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of farm management experience, including staff supervision.
- Proven experience operating farm machinery such as tractors and excavators, with basic mechanical and maintenance skills.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Effective communication skills for internal leadership and external engagement.
- Valid Driver’s License and proficiency with farm tools and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Knowledge and experience in regenerative, natural, or organic farming.
- Familiarity with Hawaiian agricultural traditions and cultural practices.
- Experience with kalo cultivation and other traditional Hawaiian canoe crops.
- Experience with farm-based education or community development programs.
- Basic skills working with computer softwares.
Working Conditions
- Full-time, 40 hours per week, typically Tuesday to Saturday, with occasional extended hours.
- Primarily in the field with office work as needed.
- Physical demands include standing, walking, equipment operation, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working long hours under sun exposure.
