Provides technical support, direction and leadership necessary to insure conformance with the Mauna Loa Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and provide for a safe work environment for all employees.  This includes assurance that the Company meets all federal, state, and local regulatory safety standards and requirements in a manner consistent with sound business practice.  The Specialist will develop and maintain a Plant IIPP that is proactive, compliant and economically justified.





  • Administer and oversee the Company's IIPP including active employee participation at all levels, hazard analyses, standard safety operating procedures and all other key elements of the program. 
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development, administration, and maintenance of Company IIPP. 
  • Ensure all supporting documentation as required by the Company's written safety program is kept current.
  • Be the face of safety to all employees at all levels thru frequent interaction on an individual and small group level.


  • Serve as liaison with outside safety agencies. 
  • Accompany safety inspectors during visits and participate in remediation efforts. Coordinate and follow-up on safety audits to ensure satisfactory compliance. 
  • Prepare and submit required reports to safety agencies in a timely manner. 
  • Ensure compliance with all safety standards and guidelines by all local, state and federal agencies.

Technical Support

  • Maintain a current working knowledge of safety regulations and laws. 
  • Provide expertise in safety assessment and subsequent safety-related problem solving. 
  • Responsible for safety and environmental training. 
  • Provide support to EAT on environmental compliance issues. 

Loss Exposure

  • Respond to, coordinate and follow up on all appropriate safety issues in a timely and effective manner to minimize any potential negative impact on all employees and on the business in general.
  • Respond to work injuries, incidents and spills. 
  • Assist supervisors with safety incident investigations, and identify necessary changes to prevent recurrence. 
  • Work closely with WC Adjuster and HR Coordinator to assist with claims management.




  • Maintain on-time and excellent attendance
  • Perform all duties and maintain all standards in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • Available for 24/7 administrative and technical support as needed
  • Serve as an advisor to the plant managers on safety related issues.
  • Under the direction of the SVP Operations, conduct periodic safety audits, intermittently participate in Safety Committee meetings, review compliance and safety.
  • Under the direction of the Senior VP Operations, make recommendations to the plant managers with regards to OSHA and IIPP safety standard compliance.  Make recommendations to minimize accident and near miss rates throughout the company.





  • Bachelor's Degree in safety-related field
  • 3 years safety administration experience working in a manufacturing environment including safety regulatory experience interacting and interfacing with safety agencies, contractors and consultants
  • In depth working knowledge of OSHA/HIOSH, NFPA, FMCSA and Worker's Compensation regulations
  • Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards
  • Environmental compliance experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, administrative and time management skills
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other programs
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work assignments
  • Ability to train employees
  • Ability to work with a diverse workforce
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work days, nights, and/or weekends



  • Safety administration experience in a food manufacturing environment
  • Safety administration experience in a power generation environment
