Job Description

 

Position Title:  Housing Specialist

Program:   Family Violence Shelter

Responsible to:  Shelter Director

Classification:  Full-Time, Exempt

Hours of work: 40 hours/week, flexible

Specific Qualifications:

 

  1. Have work experience in the domestic violence field including assessment evaluation and intervention with survivors.
  2. Must understand and be able to manage program budget, plan service delivery within budget limits, and make decisions for expenses within monetary constraints.
  3. Able to work evenings and/or weekends.

 

Education & Technical Skills:

 

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.  A.A. Degree or near completion of an A.A. Degree preferred, or combination of education and work experience.
  2. Must demonstrate proficiency in the use of office equipment i.e. computer, copier, fax machine, etc. 

 

Function:

 

Provides housing support, education and intensive case management to victims of domestic violence residing in the Shelter.  Takes a lead role in homelessness prevention and homeless program including financial support and linkage to necessary support to achieve and sustain self-sufficiency and stable housing.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  1. Answer crisis calls; provide callers with emotional support, advocacy, safety planning, and resource referrals, as appropriate.
  2. Assist in meeting needs of Family Violence Shelter (FVS) residents, including maintaining respectful and successful communal living. Ensure safety and security of FVS facility and population.
  3. Completes interview with residents assessing housing needs of participants.  Presents information about each participant’s case to staff at staff meetings.  Maintains current records for each client.
  4. Provides ongoing support to program participants in compliance with contract requirements to increase successful housing stability and self-sufficiency.  Develops individualized Housing Plan with each program recipient who needs assistance with accessing housing on Kaua’i.  Interfaces with housing resources including landlords to access and/or maintain housing on behalf of clients.
  5. Assist participants on a daily basis with referrals and advocacy as needed to assist them in accessing social, welfare, legal, medical, etc. services.
  6. Provide training and in-services to other housing social service agencies or groups on domestic violence issues as needed.
  7. Maintain records and statistical reports as required by funding contracts.
  8. Maintains current information regarding community services and referral options.  Networks with agencies providing housing and financial services which may be helpful for participants.
  9. Provides case management as appropriate including:  safety planning, community coordination, and answering crisis lines.
  10. Serves as the YWCA’s representative on the Kaua‘i Community Alliance. Attends meetings regularly as a voting member.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

Additional Requirements:

 

  1. Valid Hawaii Driver’s License, access to an insured vehicle preferred, and good driving record.
  2. Current First Aid and CPR or available for First Aid and CPR training.
