Laboratory Assistant II - III

$2,394 monthly (SR-08), commensurate w/ training and experience

$2,588 monthly (SR-10), commensurate w/ training and experience

 

Permanent, civil service appointment.  Laboratory assistants perform non-professional laboratory work requiring a practical knowledge of laboratory functions and services; and the ability to apply standard laboratory tools, methods and procedures to the service needs of the particular laboratory.  These positions provide support and assistance to professional laboratory personnel.  

 

Level II position prepares standard to difficult reagents, solutions and culture media used in laboratory tests; operates and performs quality assurance checks on various laboratory equipment; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Level III position assists microbiologists, medical technologists or other professional personnel in some phases of technical laboratory work; prepares standard to difficult reagents, solutions and culture media used in laboratory tests; operates and performs quality assurance checks on various laboratory equipment; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Exp​erience: One (1) year for the II level, and two (2) years for the III level, of progressively responsible laboratory work experience which has provided the applicant with a practical knowledge of laboratory functions, apparatus and equipment, methods and procedures, and tests.  For level III, one year of the experience must have been comparable to the Laboratory Assistant II in State service. 

 

Substitutions Allowed:  

1. Study in any accredited school above the high school level for medical technicians or laboratory technicians, may be substituted for the experience on a year-for-year basis.  Successful completion of all requirements of the medical technician or laboratory technician curriculum will be considered as meeting, in full, the experience requirement of level IV.

 

2. Study in an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience on a year-for year basis, provided that such study included an average of six (6) semester hours per year in chemistry and/or one of the biological courses.  To be creditable, all courses in these subjects must have included laboratory work.  In addition, to be creditable for level III and IV, such course work must have included laboratory work involving the preparation of standard cultural media, reagents and solutions.
