Assistant State Laboratories Administrator
$7,398 - $12,313 per month, salary commensurate w/ training and experience
Â
Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. The State Laboratories Division (SLD) administers a statewide program which conducts analyses in support of the Department of Health’s (DOH) laboratory preparedness programs for bioterrorism and chemical terrorism, environmental health and communicable disease monitoring and control activities, and investigations and public health related research; sets standards; and monitors for quality laboratory services statewide. The SLD sets standards; monitors for quality laboratory services statewide; assesses laboratory training needs statewide and coordinates local training programs with other states, training networks and federal agencies. The SLD provides diagnostic and consultative laboratory services to physicians, institutions, and various federal, State, and county agencies; and evaluates and approves licenses for clinical laboratory staff.

This position’s primary purpose is to serve as a full assistant administrator helping and supporting the State Laboratories Administrator in the overall management and administrative of the branches within the SLD, and the administrative staff of the division.

Minimum Qualification(s)
Â
EDUCATION:Â A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, epidemiology, immunology, parasitology, clinical chemistry, biological chemistry, environmental chemistry or chemistry.
Â
EXPERIENCE:Â Two to four years of specialized experience in pathology or any of the scientific disciplines in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.
Â
One year of the specialized experience must be supervisory experience equivalent to Public Health Chemistry Laboratory Manager or Microbiology Laboratory Manager in a recognized state public health or environmental health laboratory.
Â
Applicants must possess administrative aptitude in coordinating processional laboratory or research functions in recognized public health, clinical, or environmental health laboratories which must involve administrative functions, such as in planning, organizing, promoting, and directing programs; providing quality assurance measures, staff advice and assistance, and budgetary planning experience. There must be management experience demonstrated by awareness or managerial problems and the ability to solve them.

KNOWLEDGE:Â Public administration; principles and practices of public health and environmental microbiology and chemistry; laws, rules and regulations relating to public health laboratories; and the principles and practices of supervision and management.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Â Oral and written communication, interpersonal relationships, interrelated and associated management planning; plan and articulate long-and short-term objectives, analyze and evaluate laboratory needs, and guide the development of appropriate programmatic responses and analyze and evaluate employee and program performance including standards, activities, and objectives.

LICENSE: Clinical Director’s License, highly desirable.
