Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases (ELC) Biosafety Officer
$4,600 -$5,600 per month, salary commensurate w/ training and experience
Â
Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure there is adequate biosafety training and practices in the SLD to avoid potential hazards associated with the handling of biological materials, the spread of multi-drug resistant pathogens and threats of emerging pathogens, and acts of biological terrorism. The position develops and monitors adherence to laboratory biosafety programs, provides related workforce training for biosafety for SLD and sentinel clinical laboratories, assists public health and clinical laboratories with biosafety risk assessments and risk mitigation plans, and works cohesively with key system partners and public health officials to improve communications and emergency management and response practices.

Minimum Qualification(s)
Â
EDUCATION:    Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, clinical laboratory science, bacteriology, medical technology or related health science field.
Â
EXPERIENCE:  1. At least two years’ experience in handling microorganisms using Biosafety Levels 2 and 3 practices. 2. Experience with packing and shipping Class 6.2 infectious substances. 3. Possession of a Safety related certification is preferred.

The overall experience must have been of such scope and responsibility to demonstrate the ability to perform the duties described above.

LICENSE: 1. Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements and clearances, including certification on Packing/Shipping Dangerous Goods under the Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Travel Association (IATA) regulations. 2. A valid State of Hawaii driver’s license is required.
