Public Health Chemical Lab Manager
$7,999 - $13,309 per month (EM-05, Minimum to Maximum)

Note:  Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant’s qualifications, and other relevant factors.

 

Civil Service, Full-Time, Permanent Appointment.  The primary purpose of this position is to plan, organize, direct and coordinate the activities of a major public health chemical laboratory branch of the State Laboratories Division; and perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

This position is responsible for the overall administration, preparation of budgets, formulation and setting of policies, interviewing, selection of and general supervision of the performance of employees in the Environmental Health Analytical Services Branch.

 

 

 Minimum Qualification

 

EDUCATION:  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and a major in chemistry or a closely related science which included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry courses consisting of lectures, recitations and practical laboratory work.  This course of study in chemistry must have included organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry courses.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved the application of scientific laws and principles of chemistry to establish the identity, composition, coordination and/or quality of substances; or interpretation and evaluation of results of professional research or analyses by other chemists; or assessment of the need for the validity of proposed changes and improvements in laboratory procedures and methods.

 

At least one (1) year of this experience must have been comparable to the journey level or Chemist III class in the State services.

 

The Chemist III performs a variety of chemical and physical tests to establish the identity, composition, condition and/or quality of substances in a specialized area of assignment; and performs other duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE:  Two (2) years of supervisory experience which involved supervising chemists performing specialized work as described above.  Such experience must have included 1) planning and directing the work of others; 2) assigning and reviewing their work; 3) advising them on difficult problem areas; 4) timing and scheduling their work; 5) training and developing new employees; 6) evaluating the performance of subordinates and disciplining them when necessary.
