Substitute Teacher

SUMMARY
To plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
- Develop schemes of work and lesson plans
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
- Prepare classroom for class activities
- Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
- Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
- Use relevant technology to support instruction
- Observe and evaluate student's performance and development
- Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments
- Provide appropriate feedback on work
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
- Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations
- Prepare required reports on students and activities
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
- Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
- Apply appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary
- Perform certain pastoral duties including but not limited to student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement
- Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations.
- Distributes meals and snacks as needed.
- Transports students in HAAS vans as needed.
- Participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
- Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
- Maintains appropriate professional behavior at all times by treating all with respect and dignity and creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.
- Demonstrates effective communication by using a variety of techniques and systems. Communicates clearly and responds promptly. Exhibits diplomacy and sound judgement when communicating. Exhibits good listening skills and accepts feedback.
- Ensures that confidentiality is maintained in accordance with contract, State, and Federal law including FERPA and HIPAA.
- Maintains regular attendance and participates in meetings.
- Maintains awareness of and adherence to school and safety policies and procedures.
- Reports potential health and safety problems to Academic Director as they arise. Alerts the Academic Director, School Director and the Safety staff immediately upon hearing or observing a safety or public relations problem.
- Conducts work in a safe and responsible manner, utilizing protective clothing and/or equipment when appropriate. Complies with all safety standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise Educational Assistants, Teacher Assistants, Classroom Aides and/or others supporting student achievement.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Hawaii Substitute Teacher Certification OR completion of State-Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP).
Relevant experience working with school age children.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Must be ethical and honest. Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, follow-through, and oral and written communication skills. Must be extremely flexible and able to work independently.
Must be knowledgeable and comfortable working with technology and software programs, and be able to acquire additional skills for use of software, databases or other information systems as necessary.
Must be able to meet professional obligations through effective work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others. Must be able to successfully analyze information, manage complexity, report results, enter data, and observe school and state policies as well as state and federal laws with attention to detail, confidentiality, and thoroughness. Must accept responsibility and be self-motivated. Must maintain a high level of confidentiality with regard to employees, students and parents and work effectively with school staff, district personnel, and the general public.
