Job Description

Nature of the Job: The Horseback Guide position is an hourly, “on-call” position.  PRA cannot guarantee tour demand.  Guides will be scheduled for shifts on a seniority and availability basis. 
“On-call” means that guides may be scheduled for tour shifts that may not be filled with guests and therefore may not result in work.


Job Function: To lead guests in an outdoor adventure in a professional, safe, timely and effective manner. Duties include, but are not limited to: safety instruction, entertainment, verbal constructive feedback, constant monitoring of guests’ health and safety, working knowledge of emergency procedures and sharing accurate information about the state of Hawaii, the island of Kauai, the Princeville Ranch and the flora and fauna thereof.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities



1)                  Practice safe techniques to protect guests and self at all times

2)                  Provide sound leadership by using clear directions and fostering teamwork

3)                  Communicate ideas for procedural improvements regularly to Supervisor

4)                  Attend and participate in all required meetings and trainings

5)                  Communicate with coworkers effectively and be a team player

6)                  Set a good example by adhering to company policies, practices, and procedures


Customer Relations

1)                  Build positive relationships with every customer

2)                  Elevate conflict resolution to management as needed

3)                  Ensure top quality service is provided at all times

4)                  Handle emergencies professionally


Other Duties

1)                  Prepares horses for rides, ensuring horses are clean and injury free, have adequate fitting equipment and are safe for guests; notifies proper management of any problems

2)                  Appropriately and effectively tacks and un-tacks horses ensuring correct fit and equipment for each horse

3)                  Provides overall general care for horses; reports any problems/concerns to management

4)                  Assists in general clean up and tidiness of work area

5)                  Treats all company equipment and property with respect

6)                  Ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of assigned gear

7)                  Report all broken, missing or unsightly conditions of gear immediately

8)                  Report all incidents or injuries immediately according to current procedure

9)                  Maintains a neat and clean appearance

10)              Complies with “End of Shift Duties” as outlined by Supervisor


Essential Job Requirements


  • Excellent customer service and communication skills to relate with people of all types, backgrounds and ages
  • Ability to safely lift, carry and move objects weighing up to 100 pounds repeatedly daily
  • Ability to frequently kneel, bend, squat, climb, stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors for six to twelve hours in all manners of Kauai weather
  • Ability to work and think independently and to “Be Prepared”: to pack appropriately for needs of self and guests
  • Ability to problem-solve and handle a myriad of challenging guest needs with confidence and professionalism
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to understand and implement company policies, practices and procedures
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification


Non-Essential Job Requirements



  • Previous outdoor adventure leadership experience, especially in the tourism field preferred
  • Experience with leading groups in horseback riding, hiking, and/or climbing preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with horses preferred
  • Outgoing, personable, sense of humor, ability to lead and control a group, group facilitation skills, flexible, ability to take command of stressful situation, positive attitude
