Job Description

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for counseling activities, individual treatment planning, client progress evaluations, monitoring and client case management supervision in accordance with the Twelve Core Functions of Substance Abuse Counseling. The Substance Abuse Counselor works with the Cultural Counselors and HKO support staff to help clients advance to different levels of care. The SAC may represent Ho‘omau Ke Ola (HKO) to the community-at-large, as appropriate.

 

Essential Duties:

1. Engage with clients, conducts in-depth assessments, develops and documents individual treatment plans, progress notes, transfer summaries, and discharge summaries.

2. Counsels clients individually and in group, sessions to assist clients in overcoming alcohol, drug dependency, and dual-diagnosed issues.

3. Counsels family members to assist the family in dealing with and providing support for client

4. Provides case management services to update and document client progress and development in such support areas as medical, psychological, and psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

5. Monitors the condition of the clients to evaluate the success of therapy and adapts treatment plan as needed.

6. Prepares and maintains reports and case histories.

7. Formulates and conducts programs to promote prevention of alcohol, drug abuse, and dual-diagnosed disorders.

8. Attends monthly clinical supervision with Program Director, along with all in-service training sessions, clinical reviews, and staff meetings

9. Attends meeting and assumes additional assignment designated by Program Director.

10. Adheres to all applicable laws, regulations and Ho‘omau Ke Ola’s policies and procedures.

11. Models and teaches cultural values of aloha, ‘ohana, lkahi, kuleana, mlama, and pono to HKO clients.

12. All other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Executive Director.

Education Requirements:

Must hold an advanced degree in behavioral sciences (Masters in Social Work or Ph.D. in Psychology) and/or be a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC)

Experience Requirements:

Must be experienced and demonstrate competency in clinical counseling skills and diagnosis.

Must demonstrate an understanding and willingness to further learn the history, culture, and lifestyles of the local populations, especially those of the Native Hawaiians. Must also be able to interpret problems and identify potential solutions within a cultural and/or cross-cultural context.

Must have a working knowledge of the Twelve Core Functions as developed by ICRC/AODA.

Must have knowledge of government and community organizations and resources and have the ability to plan, coordinate and monitor supportive services as outlined in funding grants and other financial supports.

Requirements:

Must have current CPR, First Aid certification, and Tuberculosis clearance.

Must demonstrate a willingness to further learn the history, culture, and lifestyles of the local population, especially those of the Native Hawaiian population.

Must adhere to ethical behavior through compliance with HKO’s Code of Conduct and the standards set forth in 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA.
