Overview

The Farrowing position is essential in the care and management of sows during the birthing process and the early stages of piglet development. This role requires a dedicated individual who is passionate about animal husbandry and welfare. The Farrowing team plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of both sows and piglets, contributing to the overall productivity of our farming operations.


Responsibilities

  • Monitor and assist with sow’s during the farrowing process to ensure safe delivery of piglets.
  • Provide immediate care for newborn piglets, including ensuring they are nursing properly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of farrowing pens to promote a healthy environment.
  • Perform regular health checks on sows and piglets, identifying any signs of illness or distress.
  • Administer necessary veterinary care, including blood sampling when required.
  • Utilize proper animal restraint techniques to ensure safety for both animals and staff during handling.
  • Engage in heavy lifting tasks related to moving animals or equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records related to animal health, breeding, and farrowing outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the team to implement best practices in animal care and husbandry.
  • Provide daily feeding to sows and piglets according to feeding schedules and nutritional guidelines.

 

 Experience

  • Previous experience in veterinary care or animal husbandry is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with animal handling techniques, including restraint and care practices.
  • Basic math skills for record keeping and data entry related to animal management.
  • Mechanical knowledge is beneficial for operating equipment used in the farrowing process.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (50 lbs.)  tasks as required by the role.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining high standards of animal welfare and hygiene practices.
  • Reliable and able to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
