Job Title: Garden Coordinator (Farm to School Program)

Location: Maui, Hawaiʻi (multiple school sites)
Position Type: Part-Time
Compensation: $23-$25 per hour, based on qualifications and experience
Schedule: Approximately 12-28 hours per week depending on school schedule
Reports To: Farm to School Program Manager
Position Summary
School gardens are living classrooms where students build curiosity, responsibility, environmental stewardship, and healthy habits. We are seeking passionate, reliable, and community-minded individuals to join our team as Garden Coordinators. The Garden Coordinator position supports and maintains school garden programs while leading engaging outdoor learning experiences for students. Garden Coordinators work closely with teachers, administrators, and the Grow Some Good team to maximize the educational potential of school gardens through hands-on science, nutrition education, place-based learning, and environmental stewardship. This role combines education, gardening, relationship-building, and program coordination.
Garden Coordinator Responsibilities Garden-Based Education
- Facilitate hands-on garden lessons for students incorporating:
- Environmental science
- Nutrition education
- Agriculture and food systems
- Place-based learning
- Social emotional learning
- Stewardship and sustainability
- Create engaging outdoor learning experiences aligned with grade-level standards.
- Support inquiry-based, experiential, and project-based learning.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to align garden lessons with classroom curriculum including: Science, Math, Literacy, Social studies, Hawaiian studies, and Health and nutrition.
- Support teachers in using the garden as an outdoor classroom.
- Attend school staff meetings and collaborate with grade-level teams.
Garden Management & Maintenance
- Coordinate planting schedules and seasonal activities.
- Prepare materials, tools, and supplies for classes.
- Support garden upkeep and maintenance.
- Coordinate volunteers and engage families/community members in garden activities.
Community Engagement
- Help build enthusiasm and support for school gardens among students, teachers, families, and partners.
- Foster positive relationships across school communities.
- Support and engage in community events, volunteer workdays, workshops, and outreach activities that connect families and community members to local food systems and agriculture.
Contribute as a Grow Some Good Team Member
- Track participation, activities, and program outcomes.
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities to build skills in outdoor education, classroom management, garden-based learning, safety practices, cultural competency, and youth engagement.
- Attend local events and represent Grow Some Good in the larger community.
- Assist with or participate in school break camps, summer programming, and youth educational opportunities offered through Grow Some Good.
Required Qualifications
- 4 year college degree with work in agriculture, science, ecology, environmental science, education or related field. Relevant work experience may be substituted for college background.
- Experience working with children or youth programs
- Experience teaching environmental education, agriculture, gardening, or outdoor education.
- Knowledge of Hawaiʻi plants, agriculture, food systems, or cultural practices (preferred)
- Ability to manage groups of students in outdoor settings.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to organize work plans and work independently.
- Must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
- Must have the ability to reliably commute to work sites and travel between locations as needed.
- Must have or be willing to obtain a cell phone capable of basic communication and app use.
