Title: Outside Plant Lineman


Reports To: Line Crew Lead


Summary:  An Outside Plant Lineman is a confidential, non-exempt position that will serve the following primary function:


Outside Plant (OSP) Lineman duties will include, but not be limited to placing, rearranging and removing poles, lines, open wire, drop and block wire. An OSP Lineman will be required to work with various types of cables to perform installation and maintenance of outside plant equipment.  An OSP Lineman will be required to install lines and cables (including fiber) using construction equipment to dig holes and place or remove telephone poles.  The position will be required to work outside as part of a team performing installation, maintenance and repair of facilities that start from outside a designated Central Office (CO) and cease at the terminal or a customer's building.  An OSP Lineman will also be required to inspect previously installed infrastructure ensuring the safe and effective operation of the infrastructure.


Duties and Responsibilities:


·      Safely operate company vehicle during travel to daily work sites.

·      Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes, auxiliary equipment, or appliances, using bucket trucks, or by climbing poles or ladders, or entering tunnels, trenches, or crawl spaces. 

·      Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks; then pull lines through ducts by hand or with winches. 

·      Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduits running through trenches. 

·      Install equipment such as amplifiers or repeaters to maintain the strength of communications transmissions. 

·      String cables between structures and lines from poles, towers, or trenches and pull lines to proper tension. 

·      Dig trenches for underground wires or cables. 

·      Use a variety of construction equipment to complete installations, such as digger derricks, trenchers, or cable plows. 

·      Fill and tamp holes, using cement, earth, and tamping devices. 

·      Dig holes for telephone poles, using power augers or shovels, set poles in place with cranes, and hoist poles upright, using winches. 

·      Participate in the construction or removal of telecommunication towers or associated support structures. 

·      Clean or maintain tools and test equipment.

·      Maintain a safe and harassment free work environment.

·      Effectively work with all others including third party personnel ensuring that productivity is maximized.

·      Hold teammates accountable to all company policies and procedures.

·      Any other task assigned or requested by company management.



·      High School Diploma

·      DOT physical card to operate aerial bucket trucks

·      Must have a valid driver's license - CDL preferred

·      Operate construction equipment and machinery

·      Must be able to work nights and weekends

·      Understand basic telephony and electricity

·      Interpret service orders and engineering work plans

·      Able to work at heights

·      Trained in Pole climbing

·      Work with hand tools 

·      Work with others so being a team player is important

·      Operate a personal computer with MS Office programs to prepare detailed records and reports.       Operate a smartphone or tablet with proficiency.

·      Ability to stand for long periods of time.

·      Ability ot lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
